What's My Hair Type?

You’ve more than likely seen the terms, ‘type 2A’ or ‘2C wavy hair’ been thrown around Facebook groups and forums.

But what do they actually mean? How can you determine what type of wavy hair you have and why does it actually matter?

This guide reveals all.

WHAT ARE THE 3 HAIR TYPES?

There are three types of hair:

Type 1 – straight

Type 2 – wavy

Type 3 – curly

Each one then has a sub-classification based on its width or diameter. These classifications range from A-C.

All of us are born with a specific hair texture which may change over our lifetime. What determines whether our hair is straight, wavy or curly is the bonds between the hair proteins found within our hair shaft. The fewer bond links, the straighter our hair will be. The more links the curlier our hair will be.

For the purpose of this article, we’re going to break down the three Type 2 wavy hair patterns, so you can determine which one your hair falls within.

The main benefit of understanding this is that it’ll allow you to care for your wavy hair better. Which means your hair will become healthier, look stronger and more defined.

WHAT IS TYPE 2 WAVY HAIR?

Type 2 wavy hair is bendable and ranges from coarse fine hair to soft beach waves. The most obvious sign your hair is type 2 wavy is that it’ll have a noticeable S pattern shape.

Wavy hair is also more prone to frizz. We’ll outlined some tips in the below on how to combat this if you’re struggling to tame that mane!

Wavy hair has three classifications ranging from A-C

TYPE 2A

Women with type 2A waves have finer, flatter and easy to straighten hair (most women think it is straight).

They need to look closely to see that S shape wave pattern, yet it is there hiding away waiting to be awoken.

2A waves lack the volume often seen with other types of wavy hair. Which is why it’s recommended they use a lightweight mousse such as the Merwave Cast Foam to create space between their hair strands and make the hair look fuller. This article reveals tips on how to increase your hairs volume.

People with this type of wave must stay clear of heavy styling products. They’ll weigh your subtle waves down, which will cause the hair strands to become limp. Instead opt for lightweight mousses and gels.

TYPE 2B

The root of your hair is still straight and your hair is flatter at the crown. You’ll notice that your S shaped waves begin to form at mid length of your hair.

Your hair strands will be slightly thicker than type 2A hair, which will result in more defined waves after applying your styling products.

Frizz is more common with these types of waves. Especially on top of the head or if your hair has been damaged previously from heat products or dyes.

Using lightweight mousses and gels are your best friend here, to ensure your waves stay defined and frizz free.

TYPE 2C

Thick, well defined S-shaped waves that form at the hair roots.

This type of wavy hair has the most volume. Can often have a few cheeky curls poking through as well.

The biggest problem with 2C hair is that it's more prone to frizzing easily.

The wavy hair definition can also be lost quicker. It’s therefore critical to use the right shampoos and conditioners (free of sulphates & silicones) to avoid stripping away your hair strands natural oils. Merwaves Cleanse and Repair products fit that bill.

HOW TO PREVENT FRIZZ?

Keeping wavy hair hydrated is critical to preventing frizz.

Dehydrated hair is one of the main causes of frizz so ensure you’re keeping it dripping in moisture. Using plenty of conditioner alongside a leave in treatment (Merwave Feed Treatment) will fuel your hair with added moisture so it's super slippery.

Applying a few drops of our wavy hair oil will also help fight frizz. The oil will lubricate your hair strands and lock in the hairs moisture to prevent breakages and maintain definition. It’ll also add a nice healthy shine to your gorgeous waves.

Finally, keep your fingers away from your wavy hair. The more you touch it, the greater the chances of frizz breaking out.

AT THE END OF THE DAY...

Whether your hair is A,B or C, the core principles remain the same...

- Keep your hair deeply hydrated to prevent frizz outbreaks

- Use high quality shampoos and conditioners free of harmful ingredients to protect your scalp and avoid the removal of natural oils

- Avoid heat products (curlers, hair dryers)

- Use lightweight styling products to prevent your waves from being weighed down and becoming greasy
