How to avoid product build up

If you’ve been noticing dull, lifeless waves or an itchy scalp, product build-up might be the culprit.

Over time, hair products and natural oils can accumulate on your hair and scalp. This residue can weigh your waves down, block hydration and affect scalp health.

Build-up not only impacts how your hair looks and feels. It also reduces the effectiveness of the products, as they can’t work their magic if they’re sitting on top of layers of residue.

Avoiding product build-up is simpler than you think!

Here’s how you can keep your waves light, hydrated and build-up free…

Clarify your hair

Incorporate a clarifying shampoo once every 1-2 weeks to deep-clean your hair and remove any product build up.

Focus on clarifying your scalp, as this is where most product build-up occurs. Massage gently to break down residue, then rinse thoroughly.

Double wash

Don’t be afraid to shampoo your hair twice before adding further products. The first wash removes surface oils and build-up, while the second focuses on cleansing your hair and scalp deeply.

It also allows conditioners and treatments to penetrate more effectively, giving your waves the hydration they need without excess residue.

Silicone free products

Silicones don’t wash out easily and can accumulate, preventing moisture and nourishing ingredients from penetrating the hair shaft. This can leave your hair feeling heavy and looking greasy.

Silicone-free formulations are lightweight and allow your hair to breathe while maintaining hydration and definition.

Don’t overdo it

Avoid layering excessively and be mindful of how much product you’re applying. Layering multiple products can lead to residue quickly.

Focus on applying products to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair while avoiding the scalp. This helps prevent your roots from becoming weighed down and reduces the risk of product build-up in your scalp and hair follicles.
