5 Reasons Why Your Wavy Hair Wont Clump
Firstly, if you don’t know what clumping is, read this article first.
Clumping seems pretty simple. The theory is (when your hair is wet) it will gather into beautiful wavy clumps. Yet in reality many of us wavies find it a challenge.
Here are 5 common reasons why your wavy hair won’t clump…
1. You NEED A haircut
Is your hair too heavy and weighing down your waves? It might be time to book a hair appointment. It’s easy to think that because you’re no longer using heat and drying products on your hair that you won’t need it cut - well that is wrong, you do!
2. WRONG products
It can seem really confusing trying to figure out which products will make your wavy hair look its best and healthiest.
If you aren’t loving the results you get from your current products, don’t be afraid to switch things up. Always experiment using different amounts of your products. You could be overloading your hair with too much product. Or maybe you haven’t been using enough.
Also consider if the products are right for wavy hair. A lot of curlies group wavies into the same group, but often these products can be too heavy for wavy hair. The reason I created Merwave was to create products specifically for wavy hair.
3. HOW WET YOUR HAIR IS WHEN APPLYING STYLING PRODUCTS
Applying products to hair that is not fully saturated can really mess with your clump potential. If your hair is not fully wet, the products won’t be evenly distributed. This means you’ll end up with some flat sections, less clumps and more frizz.
Make sure you apply your styling products straight out of the shower when your hair is soaking wet. This will enable an even distribution and allow a good cast to form, leading to less frizz later.
4. NOT APPLYING PRODUCTS TO ROOTS
It might be against what you have always believed, but applying products right up to the root can really help with forming clumps. Flip your head upside down, start with the section closest to your roots and apply your styling products before working your hair down your hair.
5. WRONG TECHNIQUE
Once you have been embracing your naturally wavy hair for a while you’ll probably have found your perfect technique (after a bit of trial and error).
That being said, don’t be afraid to mix it up. There are so many ways of applying products to create clumps. Finger coiling, bowl method and brush styling are just a few ways. Again, you need to spend the time experimenting with different techniques. Something that works for one person, won’t work for another.
